I'm more of an early 70s guy but to my ears, '89-90 was sort of a last hurrah. It took them a while to build up some steam after Jerry's coma (note the conspicuous absence of big jams in '87 and the holding pattern style of '88). IMO the vast majority of the top shows during the band's last decade are to be found during these two years.

The MSG run of 1990 is truly a monster; one night is available as one of the Dick's Picks but all circulate and are essential listening for anyone.
